How does our memory work?
Profile of an old friend
This is a pen and ink drawing I did about longing and memory. What do we know about another? The memory of a person is filled with aspects of the events you shared, the places you went to together, the things that they were interested in, the image they held of themselves. Can we separate the person from their environment? Or do they in part represent their work, neighborhood, apartment? Can we see them through the same windows that they themselves looked through?
My original drawing
This densely-patterned drawing is suggesting the interiors of a person, partly constructed from memory yet in equal part those more intangible aspects of them that we also hold. I think longing influences memories as well, not so much to clarify them but more to infuse them with emotion.
Longing, a complicated friend
That's both my guide and my foe
A memory of no clear edges
Yet defines the vision so.
