Immune primary thrombocytopenia (ITP) is an autoimmune disorder in which the body’s immune system destroys platelets. Platelets are blood cells that aid in clotting and protect blood vessel walls. When platelet levels are low, it can result in severe bleeding and bruising. It is otherwise known as autoimmune thrombocytopenic purpura and idiopathic immune thrombocytopenia.
