Hello everyone, I hope you're having an amazing day. I just marathoned the Netflix docuseries, Mr. McMahon, and my mind is absolutely blown... Bill Simmons' supposed definitive documentary that was going to tell ALL, that was going to unmask the most mysterious and powerful man in wrestling history... well, I binged all six episodes and, I'm telling you right now, it's a wild, frustrating, and morbidly captivating ride... but, is it the full story we were hoping for? Not at all. To start, the production, I'll give them that, is insane... you can feel the touch of the people from The Ringer... the lineup of people they managed to sit down for an interview is on another level: Triple H, The Undertaker, Bret Hart, Hogan, Cena, even Shane, Stephanie, and Linda McMahon! The first episode, "Junior," kicks off with a bang and lays all the cards on the table. There’s a brilliant intro where they introduce everyone, and from that second on, you know who's there to sing Vince's praises and who's there with an axe to grind... you see Bruce Prichard and you think, "okay, this guy is going to defend him to the death," and right after, Bret Hart appears, and you know you're about to hear the raw, painful truth. The series shines brightest when it tries to decipher the man behind the character... what a contradictory guy! On one hand, you have the genius, it's undeniable, the visionary who saw the smoke-filled gyms of local wrestling and dreamed of a global empire... they tell you how he teamed up with MTV, how he brought in Cyndi Lauper and Mr. T for the first WrestleMania, and you can't help but think, "wow, this guy was brilliant." He literally changed the game, but in the next scene, boom!, they show you the other side: the cold, calculating manipulator, and let's be honest, with a sociopathic vibe... there's a moment, I swear, that left me cold: they ask him about his on-screen character and he, with a little laugh that chills you to the bone, says: "I don't want anybody to really know me." Knowing everything we know now, that line hits you like a ton of bricks... it’s not a defense, it’s a confession! As his own son, Shane, says in the documentary: "My father has the reputation he chooses to have." >Hola a todos, espero que estén super bien hoy, acabo de maratonear la docuserie de Netflix, Mr. McMahon, y tengo la cabeza que me explota.. el supuesto documental definitivo de Bill Simmons que iba a contarlo TODO, que iba a destapar al tipo más misterioso y poderoso en la historia del wrestling.. pues bueno, me clavé los seis episodios y, se los digo desde ya, es un viaje salvaje, frustrante y que te atrapa de una manera enfermiza.. pero, ¿es la historia completa que esperábamos? Para nada. Para empezar, la producción, eso sí, es una locura.. se nota la mano de la gente de The Ringer.. el desfile de gente que lograron sentar a hablar es de otro nivel: Triple H, The Undertaker, Bret Hart, Hogan, Cena, ¡hasta Shane, Stephanie y Linda McMahon!
El primer capítulo, "Junior", arranca con todo y te pone las cartas sobre la mesa, hay una intro genial donde los presentan a todos y desde ese segundo ya sabes quién está ahí para echarle flores a Vince y quién viene con facturas pendientes.. ves a Bruce Prichard y dices "ok, este lo va a defender a muerte", y al toque aparece Bret Hart y sabes que estás a punto de escuchar la verdad cruda, la que duele. La serie brilla más cuando intenta descifrar al hombre detrás del personaje.. ¡qué tipo tan contradictorio! Por un lado, tienes al genio, es innegable, el visionario que vio los gimnasios llenos de humo de la lucha libre local y soñó con un imperio mundial.. te cuentan cómo se alió con MTV, cómo metió a Cyndi Lauper y a Mr. T en el primer WrestleMania, y no puedes evitar pensar "wow, este tipo era un crack".
Literalmente, cambió el juego, pero en la siguiente escena, ¡pum!, te muestran la otra cara: el manipulador frío, calculador y, seamos sinceros, con aires de sociópata.. hay un momento que, se los juro, me dejó helado: le preguntan por su personaje y él, con una risita que te cala los huesos, dice: "No quiero que nadie me conozca de verdad". Sabiendo todo lo que sabemos ahora, esa frase te pega como un ladrillazo.. no es una defensa, ¡es una confesión! It's so weird! It turns into another rehash of WWE history... the Monday Night Wars again. The rise of Stone Cold and The Rock again, the story of WrestleMania again. For anyone who's already seen Dark Side of the Ring or the thousands of WWE specials, this is old news... I was thinking: "Dude, I've seen this a thousand times." It's as if they ran out of material on Vince as a person and decided to fill the time with a "greatest hits" of the company... it completely loses focus. And of course, we have to talk about the elephant in the room: the whole storm of sexual abuse and trafficking allegations that blew up WHILE they were making the documentary. The series had to address it, and they do so with a little title card at the beginning of each episode that basically says: "FYI, all of this was filmed before the worst scandal of all broke." This single fact completely flips the entire project on its head. Vince, who had been collaborating, suddenly disappeared and refused any more interviews. His absence in the final episode isn't an artistic choice, you know? It's because the guy jumped ship in real life... that makes the whole series feel instantly dated... and tragically incomplete. It's like they were trying to paint a portrait of a man while he himself was writing the final, most monstrous chapter of all. >Pero acá viene mi problema principal, y estoy seguro de que a ustedes les va a pasar lo mismo.. después de los primeros dos capítulos, el documental como que... se olvida de Vince McMahon. ¡Es rarísimo! Se convierte en otro refrito de la historia de la WWE.. otra vez las Monday Night Wars. Otra vez el ascenso de Stone Cold y The Rock, otra vez la historia de WrestleMania, para cualquiera que ya se vio Dark Side of the Ring o los miles de especiales de la WWE, esto es pan comido.. estaba pensando: "Parce, esto ya lo vi mil veces". Es como si se hubieran quedado sin tela que cortar sobre Vince como persona y decidieron rellenar con un "grandes éxitos" de la empresa.. pierde el foco por completo y claro, tenemos que hablar del elefante en la habitación: toda la tormenta de acusaciones de abuso y tráfico sexual que explotó MIENTRAS hacían el documental.
La serie tenía que tocar el tema, y lo hacen con un letrerito al principio de cada capítulo que básicamente dice: "Ojo, que todo esto lo grabamos antes de que saliera el peor escándalo de todos". Este simple hecho le da un giro de 180 grados a todo el proyecto, Vince, que venía colaborando, de repente se borró y no quiso más entrevistas. Su desaparición en el último capítulo no es una decisión artística, ¿eh? They were, as someone in the doc says, "disposable toys." But the part that truly leaves you speechless is the story of Rita Marie, the female referee who accused Vince of sexual assault in the '90s... the documentary shows you a piece of a deposition Vince gave, and his response... is one of the most cynical and disgusting things I've ever heard in my life. First, he claims it was consensual, but then, with a calm that chills you to the core, he adds that even if it had been a rape, the statute of limitations had already expired. Are you kidding me?! The audacity to say that in front of a judge... it tells you everything you need to know about his morals... or well, the lack thereof. For him, there are no limits. The series also delves into the brutal labor exploitation, especially in the '80s... the wrestlers worked their asses off almost every day of the year, with no health insurance, and if they got injured, tough luck, they didn't get paid. It's insane to think that in a country where almost all sports and entertainment have unions, wrestlers are still unprotected... and who do we have to thank for sabotaging the first attempt to form one? None other than Hulk Hogan! The guy admits on camera that he went and snitched to Vince... what a hypocrite, right? Especially coming from the guy who was supposed to be every kid's hero. >A ver, con todo y eso, el documental no se corta y sí te muestra parte del lado más oscuro de su pasado.. el trato que le daban a las mujeres en el wrestling de esa época... de verdad que te revuelve el estómago, eran, como dice alguien por ahí, "juguetes descartables". Pero la parte que de verdad te deja sin palabras es la historia de Rita Marie, la réferi que acusó a Vince de agresión sexual en los 90.. el documental te pone un pedazo de una declaración que dio Vince, y su respuesta... es de las cosas más cínicas y asquerosas que he escuchado en mi vida. Primero, dice que fue consensuado, pero después, con una tranquilidad que te hiela la sangre, agrega que, incluso si hubiera sido una violación, el delito ya había prescrito. ¡¿Me estás jodiendo?! El descaro de decir eso frente a un juez... te dice todo lo que necesitas saber de su moral.. o bueno, de la falta de ella. Para él no hay límites.
La serie también le entra a la explotación laboral brutal, sobre todo en los 80.. los luchadores se rompían el lomo casi todos los días del año, sin seguro médico y si se lesionaban, mala suerte, no cobraban. Es una locura pensar que en un país donde casi todos los deportes y el entretenimiento tienen sindicatos, los luchadores sigan desprotegidos.. y a quién le agradecemos por sabotear el primer intento de armar uno? ¡Nada más y nada menos que a Hulk Hogan! El tipo admite en cámara que fue y le sopló todo a Vince.. qué hipócrita, ¿no? It tells you how he was "building something" and simply "competing" when he systematically annihilated other promotions by poaching their talent... but years later, when Ted Turner and WCW started doing the exact same thing to him, he acts like it's the worst betrayal and the most unethical thing in the world. It's the perfect window into his mind: it's only wrong when it's done to him. Watching the testimonies is a show in itself. You have The Undertaker and Bruce Prichard nearly in tears, saying they would "take a bullet" for Vince... hearing that now... it's just unbelievable. It sounds like people defending a cult leader, I swear. Then you have Bret Hart, who you can tell is still deeply hurt by the betrayal and disappointment Vince caused him. His pain feels palpable, it's real. Even Vince's own family gives a much more critical and complicated view... it's clear the damage he did goes far beyond his business or his employees. So, after all this, what's the verdict? Honestly, I'm torn. As a documentary, for me, it's a failure... it has no clear direction, it goes off on tangents, and in the end, Vince himself ended up sabotaging it. It's not THE biography they sold us, not by a long shot. BUT, and this is a big but, as a document to understand this moment, to get us to start talking about this, it's incredibly important to watch... it's a fascinating, albeit broken, look at a man who built an empire of fantasy, only to have his own disgusting reality become the most shocking story of all. It’s entertaining in that "can't-look-away-from-a-car-crash" kind of way. For me, I'm giving it a 6/10, and I'm being generous... you have to watch it, but with a clear mind: you're not going to get the whole story. What you're going to see is the story of how a story fell apart, just like its protagonist... and well... that's it for today's review! Take care! Bye-bye! >Y hablando de hipócritas... el documental es genial para mostrar la doble moral de Vince, te cuenta cómo él estaba "construyendo algo" y simplemente "compitiendo" cuando aniquiló sistemáticamente a las otras promotoras robándoles su talento.. pero años después, cuando Ted Turner y la WCW le empezaron a hacer exactamente lo mismo, actúa como si fuera la peor traición y la cosa más antiética del mundo. Es la ventana perfecta a su mente: solo está mal cuando se lo hacen a él.. ver los testimonios es un show aparte, tienes a The Undertaker y a Bruce Prichard casi llorando, diciendo que "recibirían una bala" por Vince.. escuchar eso ahora... es que no te lo crees. Parece gente defendiendo al líder de una secta, se los juro, luego tienes a Bret Hart, que se nota que todavía le duele en el alma la traición y la decepción que le causó Vince. Su dolor se siente, es real. Incluso la propia familia de Vince te da una visión mucho más crítica y complicada.. se nota que el daño que hizo va mucho más allá de sus negocios o sus empleados.. entonces, después de todo, ¿cuál es el veredicto? La verdad, estoy dividido.
Como documental, para mí, es un fracaso.. no tiene un norte claro, se va por las ramas y al final, el propio Vince lo terminó saboteando, no es LA biografía que nos vendieron, ni de chiste. PERO, y este es un gran pero, como documento para entender el momento, para que empecemos a hablar de esto, es importantísimo verlo.. es una mirada fascinante, aunque rota, a un hombre que construyó un imperio de fantasía, solo para que su propia realidad asquerosa se convirtiera en la historia más impactante de todas. Es entretenido de esa forma en que no puedes dejar de mirar un choque, para mí, le doy un 6/10, y me estoy arriesgando.. tienen que verla, pero con la mente clara: no van a tener la historia completa, lo que van a ver es la historia de cómo una historia se vino abajo, igualito que su protagonista.. y bueno.. hasta aquí la reseña de hoy!
