When we think of Britain’s public services there are some that we might think are not very controversial. They are the services that just do what they say they are going to do and which they were set up to do. Public libraries are one such service. They are there, we might use them and it is a service, unlike for example the NHS, that is relatively uncontroversial. We might not think too much about such services but when you find out what Cornwall’s library services are up to then maybe you should think more about how and for whom these services are run.
Apparently, according to the Daily Sceptic, libraries in Cornwall have been giving away free bookmarks to library service users printed not with what you might expect, which is information about the local library service which is often the case, but with pro-migration propaganda.
This in my view undermines what a library should be. A library should be a place where you get access to all sorts of information without the editorial input of whatever the politics is of the library staff.
Once a library departs from that noble aim and becomes an outlet for regime propaganda such as trumpeting the benefits of migration then it’s a library that should lose the trust of its users. After all if a library service is willing to use part of its publicity budget to promote pro-migration propaganda then what else about the library is being affected in a similar way? If this sort of propaganda is acceptable to library management then it does raise the question of how much else of the library service’s activity is rooted not in giving the public access to knowledge but dishing out propaganda? Does this willingness to propagandise for example also affect the choice of reading materials that the library service stocks?
The Daily Sceptic said:
“Council libraries have distributed pro-migrant bookmarks that praise the work ethic of refugees and say they aim to help people “embrace new cultures” as the area will “naturally become more diverse”. The Telegraph has the story.
“The bookmarks say asylum seekers can contribute “economically and culturally”, and that the area will “naturally become more culturally diverse”.
They were devised by the inclusion and belonging team at Cornwall council, which receives direct Home Office funding to help settle refugees, and shared in libraries across the county.
A QR code on the bookmarks brings up a webpage containing information on new arrivals and the need to settle asylum seekers in Cornwall.” “
The whole point of this bookmark scheme that the Daily Sceptic said was cooked up for last year’s ‘Refugee Week’, is in my view to propagandise Cornish people into thinking that hordes of costly and disruptive third worlders are nothing to worry about. The council has certainly overstated the economic benefit that these third worlders bring. They often cost countries money rather than earn it.
Every single penny of this vile propaganda campaign has come from the public purse. The problem is this is not a one off, the Government local and national spends millions on similar propaganda either directly or indirectly through pro-migration charities. I do not trust organisations that tell me lies about migration or which parrot empty phrases such as ‘diversity is a strength’ and I would not trust any library that was giving out such items. If a library is willing to give out propaganda then what books are they including or keeping off of their shelves?
