One of the most beautiful things in this world, are these fish, records, which are native to the Amazon River, I leave a little story about them ....
Without a doubt when we talk about the discus fish we are talking about the king of the freshwater aquarium. This is undoubtedly due to its beautiful colors, its shape, its size, its beautiful movements, and its great presence when being in an aquarium, but a curious fact that few know is that its discovery is linked to a real marriage.
History takes us to the beginning of the year 1800, the Chancellor of State and Minister of Foreign Affairs Clemens Wenzeslas-Lothar von Metternich-Winneburg (1773-1859) suggested to the Emperor of Austria, Francis I, that he marry his daughter Leopoldine to to occupy the same throne that included Brazil in its dominions. The marriage would not only unite the houses of Habsburg and Bragança, but would also enrich the Austrian imperial natural history collection.
The royal entourage would be accompanied by a team of scientists, painters, researchers and academics. Among them were Johannes Baptist von Spix, Philipp von Martius and F. Johannes Baptist Natterer. Brazil at that time contained unknown secrets; The land was described as a place full of wealth and wildlife but the deep and mysterious jungle was an enigma. Multiple expeditions were made to classify species.
All these expeditions fell in line with the thinking of the royal family so they had all the support of the crown and not only that, the emperor commissioned a garden in Schönbrunn, which later became a zoo. Léopoldine kept the parrot, white foxes and Bantam hens.
Eventually most members of the expeditions began to return to Austria, but Natterer persisted in these tasks, putting at risk even his life during this period, although he finally managed to reach Barcelos in the Amazon where the first record would be caught in a network to be studied.
It was between 1831 and 1834 when Natterer managed to catch an album in his networks, Barcelos is famous for its importance in the ornamental fish trade, sometimes I want to imagine what it was like back then, in some books it is mentioned that during those years it was possible to see cardinal trade (Paracheirodon axelrodi).
I leave some pictures of my fish.
