Back in the day, I'm talking about the millennial age, this time when there is nothing like social media or even the Internet like we are now. I could remember how our upbringing was; our upbringing then is so tough. There are more reasons we have respect, discipline, and self-esteem.
This is because they brought us up with more punishment than rewards. Unlike this era we are in now. This is an era where a child can disrespect anyone and still get away with it. An era where a sixteen-year-old will talk down on a fourth-year-old person, and the society will still support the situation.
This is the lack of punishment, discipline, and even self-control. Back then your neighbors would deal with you even before your parents were aware. I could remember vividly, if we do anything wrong then, they would have dealt with us before our parents were aware, and it will still be multiplied when they get to know.
However, this gets to shape us in a good way and teaches us a lot of things about life. The real question is, which one works better: is it both the punishment and the rewards? Or can one be taken away and the other go well for a child?
When bringing up a child, it is necessary for them to be aware of what is going on, because raising children is a great responsibility. What you raise now will either do good to the community or bad depending on how you raise them. However, when a child does something good, it is important to reward that particular child because in this way it has a way to motivate the child and tell him or her to do well in the future.
For instance, if any of my students did well in competition, I used to give them some rewards. Rewards can come in any form, be it verbal or materialistic. Telling a child I'm proud of you will go a long way; Weldon is also part of the rewards, and buying gifts for them too goes well. If your child did well in their exams and you gifted him/her, they will do better the next session.
On the other hand, punishment goes a very long way and shapes a child for a better life. If a child does something bad and they are not punished, they will think what they did is right and there are no consequences for any actions we take.
If there is punishment, they will know the right from the wrong; if there's punishment, they will also have discipline. And punishment doesn't have to be beating or physical things; you can simply punish someone by frowning, taking away what they use, and so on, like that.
So in summary, both punishment and reward go a long way in a child's life, and no one should be taking away from it. If one is taking away, it will affect the other, and any mistakes that have been made as a child will tell in the future.
