Dawn of War is hands down one of the best RTS games ever made. It was a first true mainstream RTS game set in Warhammer40k universe and it was a big hit followed by three expansions Winter Assault, Dark Crusade and Soulstorm. Those were huge expansions that introduced new races and new campaigns and basically created new hordes of Warhammer40k fanatics (me included). Dawn of War as a package with expansions was and still is among my favorite RTS games ever.
After a few silent years and Dawn of War 2 success I came upon a mod for Soulstorm called Ultimate Apocalypse, seen some screenshots, seen some new races, was immediately sold on the concept of the mod, everything is enhanced in true over the top Warhammer40 style. Basic game had three tiers of upgrades, this mod went overboard with 5 tiers, planet destruction titans and super weapons. I was crying mantears of joy while playing this.
Over the years the mod kept on being updated with new races(12 races total) and units, people are basically working on this mod for 15 years, they still do and there seems to be another release coming soon. That is some insane passion and commitment if you ask me, fuck firefighters these guys are my true heroes.
Dawn of War 3 unfortunately flopped hard when Relic was bought by Sega, they tried to make a game that will compete with Starcraft 2, but in the meantime took a huge dump on every long term fan of the franchise with absolutely shitty gameplay decisions. It was a money grab, to this day I'm still pretty disappointed by the road they decided to take. But you know what, Ultimate Apocalypse is still here to mend the wounds. This mod explored every Warhammer40 race and almost every unit ever created for those races. Sure the graphics are outdated, but that was never something that would stop a true fan from enjoying the mod. This mod deserves no score, it is perfect.
