After a stroll through the streets filled with fruit, sweets, coffee, handicrafts, flowers, people, and blazing sunshine, I got hungry and thirsty—really thirsty. My boyfriend and I went to “Moritz,” a restaurant in Colonia Tovar that reminded him of his youth, so we decided to relive those moments and order two beers 🍻
But not just any beer—I wanted a Tovar because in this little corner of Germany, located in Venezuela’s Aragua state, they brew craft beer. And even though it wasn’t Saturday, this beer can’t be left out of #BeerSaturday Challenge 467 because it deserves it.
They had draft beer—a bit darker than the bottled version—and a blonde “Hefe Weizen,” which we decided on since it was perfect for the weather with its 4.9% alcohol content.

It's perfect. It has a bitter flavor, but it's smooth on the palate. I've always thought that Tovar beer isn't meant to get you drunk; it's meant to be savored and enjoyed with a good meal. And since we were in Colonia Tovar, we couldn't pass up the German sausages with potatoes and sauerkraut (sour cabbage).
The “Moritz” didn't disappoint us; 40 years later, the place has grown, but the service, food, and drinks are still just as exquisite. There were many young couples with babies. By the way, Germany beat Curaçao 7-1 that day.
As we left the restaurant, we walked past the church. There stands “La Casa Benitz,” another place steeped in history. It was built between 1844 and 1845 as both a residence and a store. According to the history inscribed on the door, the first craft beer in Colonia—and in Venezuela—was brewed in its basement. Today, this basement is home to “Café Muhstall,” a café with amazing desserts. My boyfriend was absolutely certain we couldn’t leave without trying the raspberry cheesecake 🥰 What can I say!

Es perfecta. Un sabor amargo, pero suave al paladar. Siempre he pensado que la cerveza Tovar no es para caerse a palos, es para degustar y acompañar con una buena comida, y como estábamos en la Colonia Tovar no dejamos pasar las salchichas alemanas, con papas y sauerkraut (repollo agrio).
El "Moritz" no nos decepcionó, 40 años después el lugar ha crecido, pero su atención, comida y bebidas siguen exactamente exquisitas. Había muchas parejas jóvenes con bebés. Por cierto, ese día ganó Alemania 7-1 contra Curazao.
