This is our groundnut farm and the growth progress so far. It is almost about time for harvest yet everywhere is looking fresh and green. The crops are enjoying the consistent downpour of this season and instead of changing color and getting matured, they chose to remain fresh.
Yesterday we were checking the nuts for signs of maturity. When the nuts seeds are matured underneath, they begin to change color that is the leaves of the plant and the second flowering on them goes off completely. When these happens we know that the seeds are not maturing underneath and in order to confirm you just pull up a plant and check the nuts. And if the seeds are confirmed matured then we begin to prepare for harvest.
Another thing that usually happens when there is adequate rainfall is that the nuts can get matured while the leaves gives us no prior sigh. And while we keep lingering and delaying harvest, the matured nuts begin germinating all over again.
Matured groundnuts seeds in the ground can begin to germinate if not harvested on time. Imagine the nut seeds you want to harvest sprouting when pulled up from the ground. Nothing can be done with such nuts especially when they do that real quick and become vegetative again.
It is important to measure the appropriate maturing time of our groundnut plants, harvest them up when due or risk loosing back the nuts when they sprout in the ground before harvest.
Having consistent daily rainfall at this time for rice plant and other farm plant is really good but groundnuta, this is what will happen to them if we are not watchful.
Can you see our beans plants, they are so fresh, enjoying the weather and growing pretty well. one farming practices we often do is mixed cropping. Some people are often unaware of what type of crops they can mix with which.
Mixed cropping has to be done in such a way that the growth of one crop will does affect the other. We usually pick the timings in such a way that before oke crop starts to reach some milestone in it's growth, the other crop is harvested before it.
Mixed cropping is one of the ways we maximize the little farmable lands we have here. Farming lands are limited and often times we like to grow a little of all the crops we eat.
