It's a beautiful day in the land of the living and even though it looks like our work has taking a routine schedule this week we have majorly focused on transplanting.
Yesterday we decided to complete the remaining transplanting of the lettuce plant since there was yet another downpour that had made the ground very much soft and comfortable for planting lettuce. Unlike rice lettuce is very very fragile and you have to be very careful in transplanting Lettuce.
The land has to be wet enough but not submerged in water.
For this reason it was almost very necessary to make ridgest and till the ground till it is soft enough for the seedlings to survive.
The seedlings were then transfered from the nursery into the field. Transplanting lettuce is much faster than that or rice and the work is less stressful. In general it is actually much much easier to grow vegetables than any other crops. Once the necessary soil requirements are met vegetables don't hesitate to produce well.
It takes max 2 months to grow lettuce, they spend at least a month in nursery and after they are transplanted into the field they spend another one month and their size by then will truly be ready for harvest, even though they can grow bigger and bigger is permitted.
Personally I would permit then to spend at least 6-8 weeks in nursery and at that stage they normally give us some of the largest sizes we desire to see.
This is the second time these lettuce is grown this year. The first set were harvested and sold out thesame time. The community members rushed in to purchase their own portion for their personal consumption and the rest was sold out in the market, which was then moved from this community to other locations. Alot of the local people enjoy eating lettuce. It was much cheaper to grow the first set than this current one as there was adequate rainfall there but for this one we have been alternating irrigation and rainfall and the downpours were not consistent earlier.
