Parent do have a duty to guide and discipline their children. As you said, actions and lessons stick. Children learn and emulate what they see - so their training and guidance should start at an early age.
It is great acknowlegdement to your upbringing that you were seen as different from expectations. This is true testimony to the fact that it all starts at home with good parenting.
