Some people want to believe the lies as it chimes with their own prejudices.
Willfully ignorant is the default of some people or just plain ignorant.

They wouldn't know or accept the truth even if their own wellbeing depended on it.

"Working class conservative" is an oxymoron but there are plenty of them out there.
