I think IBM's open architecture paved the way to the open source we have today.

Sharing software was the norm in the early days primarily because it was a niche thing.

When computing became more popular companies got greedy and almost killed the whole thing off...except people found ways to share software still.

I had a few early IBM machines and it was great fun trying to squeeze a little more memory out of them 😀
