We had always thought about doing something like this but never took the plunge. We don't know what happened that summer, but we finally took the plunge. Skydiving girls!
We talked about it. We asked for a day off. We looked for good deals, tickets and rental car. In less than two weeks we were there. It was Friday in August. We were going to make the jump at the Cerdanya Aerodrome. The scheduled time was 15:00 p.m., so we were confident and went to eat something and visit the area. As soon as we had the last bite, they called us to bring forward the jump to.... in 10 minutes.
The tension started! Our smiles disappeared and the beach tan became an off-white. Cold sweats and constant cramps. Nerves and laughter.
We arrive at the airfield. We put on the harness and wait for the plane to arrive. Airstrip. We got in. There were nine of us in the plane. All ready to fall into the void. Those seven launched and the two guys piloting the aircraft.
We climbed to an altitude of 4,000 meters. Although, since the airfield was already 1,000 meters above sea level, it was as if it were 5,000 meters. We were 5 km above the ground, and from those little windows what we could see looked like a model. All those huge green mountains, but from there they looked tiny. They were the Pyrenees. We heard: "Guys, 3 minutes and you jump".
They put the harness on us. They put on our goggles and we prepared ourselves by breathing through our noses. You have to save your saliva so as not to damage your ears during the fall. It is quite difficult because the nerves made us talk non-stop, and that dries your mouth.
They open the door. They say it's chillingly cold, but I don't feel it. And the first one goes. She stands up and jumps. The rest of us watch her fall into the void and disappear into the clouds in a matter of seconds. As if the sky had swallowed her up. That image does not help much, quite the contrary. And the next ones jump, the operation is repeated. Until it's my turn. I don't know why, but I'm the last one to jump.
I sit on the edge of the hatch, hooked to my monitor and with my whole body hanging in the air. My face reflects fear, I can feel it. I know they are recording me, but I am unable to make another face. It was 5 seconds of waiting in that position that felt like hours.
1,2,3, arms crossed and.... there it goes!!!! The first moments of free fall I feel the body in tension. Panic and eyes closed. As soon as I open my eyelids I am aware of the incredible landscape. Automatically my body relaxes and I start to enjoy the sensation of descending at full speed. I am in the middle of the void. It is indescribable. I just feel myself falling very fast. I try to scream but I can't. The air pressure doesn't allow it. The air pressure doesn't allow it. I can't even get my voice out. I open my mouth trying to make some kind of sound, but it's a useless effort.
You don't know how long you've been falling. Suddenly, you feel a strong pull that makes you climb upwards. Yes, it worked. The parachute worked. Once open, the feeling is totally different. You are still in mid-air. Your body doesn't shake like it did five seconds ago. You just feel yourself flying above those great mountains. Suspended in the air. Relaxed.
You descend little by little, letting yourself be carried along as if you were the leaf of a tree in a wind current. The size of the landscape increases proportionally. Until you are at ground level. You raise your legs and let the monitor you're wearing on your back land on the ground like a baby koala bear. That monitor that you have not even remembered until then. And it is there, once on the ground when you assimilate what you have just been able to do.
The excess of adrenaline in your body makes you not even know what you are saying, but you are very happy. Or so I could see afterwards in the video, that my only words the whole time were something like: "I LOVE IT! WHAT A STUNNER! WHAT A FLIP!!! ". Decorated with a huge smile that reached me from one ear to the other.
