I am firmly convinced that the reason so many Americans never pick up another book after high school is because we're teaching the wrong books in high school. There's definitely a place for highly academic and literary works, especially when placed in a historical context, but if students grow up thinking "reading" is synonymous with "suffering through stories about people to whom they cannot relate and about whom they don't care", we're doing our culture a disservice.
