I think a lot of things that seem insane are actually just a result of exceptionally 'foreign' trains of thought that have developed over centuries. Look at Islam. It's totally incompatible with western values if you take it by word.

Many things there seem absolutely abominable to us, while they feel the same about us. In many aspects, we're both right in our own parts, but some things are just unfathomable to agree on. Does that make the entirety of the muslim world insane and terminally ill? All 2 billion + of them? That's a hard one to convince.

The same with Russia, Putin, China. They have a whole separate history and set of values. It's entirely possible that putin is dead serious about his reclamation of russian historical lands. China is dead serious about this exact same thing after all. We don't foten question that, yet they took Tibet, Inner Mongolia, Xinjiang, and more, in the same way.

So, I hesitate to jump to insanity so easily
