I’m a little late posting this but.....
Being aware 365 in this house. But I’m not going to ask for Autism Awareness today I’m going to ask for Autism Advocacy today. With 1 in 68, By now everyone is “aware” of what autism is or what it can look like through behaviors. But do you advocate for someone you know with autism? Are you extra patient and do you tell others to be? Do you support autism in your community? (not a big organization like autism speaks, but something local or just a family and is it doing more than posting on FB in April?) Advocate.
Think about this....have you ever lost a loved one or given birth and you were so overcome with emotion you couldn’t find the words to express that emotion? But you have words - you are a verbal, speaking person. Now imagine you have autism and everyday frustrations, stress and overwhelming situations happen and you can’t express it, you don’t know how to even if you are verbal, high functioning. Even worse is not having words at all, being nonverbal. So imagine that overwhelming emotion and no way to express it except through behaviors. This is autism. Understand it, Advocate for it. 🧩💙
