Hello Sci-fi family.... Just got back from the market, to seeing this prompt..wow what a perfect timing.
This week's prompt feels timely, because saving money is something I think about often, not because I've mastered it, I have made several financial mistakes, but I'm still learning how to safe a certain amount of money every month without tampering it no matter what, and surprisely my new strategy seems to be working for me.
The best money-saving habit that has worked for me is buying in bulk, but doing it wisely and saving the rest.
As a teacher and a monthly earner, my salary comes once a month, and if I'm not intentional, the money can disappear before the month is even halfway done. One habit that has genuinely helped me is stocking up on foodstuff and household essentials right after payday, instead of buying small quantities every few days.
Buying items like rice, beans, garri, or toiletries in bulk almost always works out cheaper than repeatedly buying small amounts from the same store. Small purchases feel manageable at the time, but they add up and cost more overall. They also mean more trips to the market, and every trip brings the temptation to pick up extra things that weren't part of the original plan.
There's also a mental benefit to buying in bulk. Once the essentials are already in the house, I stop thinking about them. I'm not tempted to eat out because "there's nothing to cook," and I'm not making impulsive purchases because I already know what I have at home.
My advice for anyone who wants to try this approach
Before your next payday, make a list of what you use every month without fail, rice, oil, seasoning, soap, toothpaste, tissue, and so on. Buy enough of these to comfortably last the month, ideally while prices are stable. Whatever is left becomes your flexible spending money, and from there you can plan your savings.
It isn't a complicated tip, no app, no spreadsheet required. But it has helped me spend less impulsively and stay more aware of where my money goes each month.
