Dokudami
I can hardly believe how quickly the dokudami, fish mint has taken over my garden! It seems to be multiplying like crazy. My aunt originally planted it to make her own dokudami tea, and within just a few years, it has spread all over my garden. Unfortunately, my aunt is getting older and can’t visit alone anymore. She used to come by every few months to see my mom, but now, her bad legs and back make it too difficult for her to visit.
As I admired the abundance of dokudami, I thought about what to do with it. That’s when I stumbled upon an interesting article online about making a natural insecticide using dokudami flowers. I also have some water pots in my garden where I grow beautiful lotus flowers. They’re great for attracting birds in the summer, but what else do they attract? Mosquitoes!
Inspired to put the dokudami to good use, I made an insecticide. First, I picked and washed the flowers. Then, I soaked them in alcohol for three months. It turns out the extract has a smell that insects can’t stand! While working with the dokudami, I couldn’t help but think of my aunt, so I even pruned some with my mom for good measure. It turned into a nice little project, and I felt great knowing I was making good use of the plants!
庭のドクダミの増殖力が半端ない。 本当にどんどん増えていく、ドクダミ。 叔母がドクダミ茶を作るために、植えたドクダミが数年で庭に拡がりました。 その叔母もこの頃は年を取り、一人では遊びにこれなくなってしまった。 オカンに会いに、数ヵ月に一回来ていた叔母さんも、今では足腰が悪くなり、この庭にもぜんぜん来ていない。 たくさん拡がったドクダミを見ながら、どうしようかと考えていたら、ネットでドクダミの花を使って自然の殺虫剤を作る方法を紹介していた。 私の庭には蓮の花を育てるため、鉢に水を入れています。 夏に鳥達の水呑場にもなっているのですが、そこに蚊が大量に発生します。 そこで、ドクダミを使って殺虫剤を作ってみることにしました。 先ずは花を摘み取って、洗うようです。 そして、アルコールに３ヶ月浸けるだけ。 するとドクダミからエキスが出てきて、昆虫達が嫌う匂いがするようです。 叔母さんを思い出しながらオカンと一緒にドクダミを剪定しました。
