Having grown up in the "Golden State" I once saw a day that was so windy the Gophers were digging in the sky. JK, of course, but I understand what you mean. The biggest misunderstanding about CA is that nature wanted it to be a desert. Southern Ca (LA area) is indeed a desert since the water they get is totally imprted from other parts of the country. Sorry, I digress. Most of the residential plantings that most folks are letting die right now is "Non-native" plants. these usually have a higher amount of sap/oils that are highly combustible and they are placed close to the house.
I love the photo of the California Oak, brings back memories of trips down to Hunter Ligget in Central CA for using their shooting ranges.
