Hey... running a business is definitely not easy but I got some tips, I heard it from here and there -
- Have a niche market and price accordingly. If you are selling saree for richer class of people - they spend in marriage, festivals - price accordingly... price high for these customers...they will be few in number but profits will be more..
it depends on your saree too... rich or middle class people may like saress - handloom, handwoven, and really speacial , so they will pay...charge high rate for them .
- Marketing
Obviously, its special...make things interesting and vibrant for them.
In saree domain, sales talk is required. Some, confident talk on this saree will be good for customer - its color, weight, design, material
And offer discounts for buying lot of sarees ... I know that richer people buy sarees for gifting for their maids, cooks in functions...
- Saress for common folk- these maybe be competitive price, lower price - large sales... quality is generally not good... but even here customers will look for value for money..
You should build a customer base, get referals... in your business... and have some rich customers to buy your higher priced sarees... I also suggest, doing a market research ... procurement of sarees...there are still small weavers not able to sell their sarees, find them and market their products.. you can give them comission according to sales...
Find out about your competitors too...products, pricing and ooffer something extra...
Sarees maybe also for comfort, style, fashion, design...so keep only those sort of sarees, some decently priced for mid range customers and some higher range for sarees that richer folks buy like for marriage for instance.
Now, I also suggest have some eco friendly sarees, like cotton sweet sarees... few customers like me may want that, than silk... that's got killing silk worms and are a form of violence.
Anyway...I think its a very interesting business...and its great your running a ancestral business as its your father's shop...and I am sure you got reputation, and customers and several stories to narrate... sarees goot for attending functions, brides purchasing sarees very enthusiastically and maybe some customers who are first time saree wearers.
and remember...saree is complicated like women only...theirs blouse to be stitched...pallu or something... its like a rainbow... so supplementary business tie up may help... maybe there will be lady tailors looking for business, find them and make things convenient for customers.
There maybe endless possibilities. Anyway...
