Zoos had their place at one point to help educate people about the animals across the world, but with the advent of visual media they probably aren't necessary any more. I certainly don't agree with taking animals from the wild to serve as pets or entertainment, but for those who have been bred in captivity and as pets it can be harder to reintegrate them into the wild than to let them live their life out in captivity.
