It must be hard to see this and very saddening.
I've always been a big believer in leading by example. Children are very clear cut in what they see as right and wrong, so to say they should behave one way, but not behave that way yourself is confusing and I can even imagine it would promote dishonesty.
Having said that, something I've always been big on is honesty. I've always expressed its importance to my girls and why it's important. Yet my eldest began lying in her teens (and earlier, but all children do at some point). At first I could talk to her she would admit the lie and explain her actions, but after a while she would continue the lie even when caught out and try to turn it on me or others around her. Thankfully, she's been getting help with her issues and her moral values would certainly never lead her to crime.
I guess sometimes it doesn't matter how good an example you give your children, it's not always going to have the effect you want, but, judging by your findings, it still makes a difference.
