You must have felt rather betrayed by your friend and I'm sure that even with forgiveness it has changed your relationship. I made a rule for myself, even as a child, never to lend anyone anything I couldn't afford to give and to also assume I would not get it back. That way if they never returned the loan it would not be a loss for me. I now realise that it also meant that it would not have impacted our friendship either, although I never had anyone not pay me back.
