Or what I call, being prepared for the future. Prepping gets a lot of flak from non-preppers. They think all preppers are doomsday fanatics sitting in their bunkers, turning a plastic bottle into a radiation proof suit and mask. Obviously this is an exaggeration but you get the idea. Preppers are crazy, the world isn’t going to end.

What most people with a closed mindset (the people above) fail to realize is that most preppers are concerned about 2 scenarios:

A. Natural Disasters- the U.S. experiences almost all natural disaster phenomenon. Tornados, earthquakes, hurricanes, volcanic eruptions (hold the potential for), floods, sinkholes (fun fact: Florida has the most sinkholes of any state), wild fires, tsunamis and avalanches. Pretty much the only one we don’t experience are typhoons (because they’re just hurricanes occurring in a different ocean).

B. Social collapse occurring after an economic collapse-Is this really that crazy? Think about it we know economic collapses happen. In the definition of an economic collapse it says that civil unrest often accompanies it. (Source) Given the current economic and social climate I would say this situation becomes more likely every day.

For situation A, we have government agencies tell us all the time to be prepared. Have an evacuation plan, food, water, flashlights and a radio. This really isn’t any different than what preppers do. They store food, water, batteries etc. Some websites even describe a bag containing everything you would need if you need to evacuate. Sound familiar? That’s definitely a bug out bag!

Situation B is where homesteading comes into the picture. What better way to prepare for crazy inflation and crazy people that having your own food source? This is why I truly believe that the end result of prepping is homesteading. You can only store so much food, at some point (depending on the situation) you will run out. Having your own property that can sustain you and your family is the first step to surviving a social or economic collapse.

The second part to that would be you need to be able to defend that property. That’s where guns and ammo come into play. I think this is where a lot of people scratch their heads at prepping. They simply can’t wrap their heads around how desperate people will be in this kind of situation. Let’s face it most of America doesn’t even know where their food comes from let alone how to grow it. What are these people going to do when we aren’t shipping food in from other countries? When the social collapse is so bad that the people doing the shipping abandoned their jobs and went home to their families? Or when the inflation is so high they can’t afford to buy food. Think this totally insane? Just look at Russian and German history.

You may be thinking, this is where the government comes in. They’re supposed to help us! Well in America I think Katrina pretty much proved how little we can count on the government in the event of a natural disaster. If there’s an economic and social collapse I think you can bet that the government will be too busy trying to keep order to worry about taking care of each and every citizen, regardless of what country you’re in and their government programs. I just happen to be of the mindset that you should be prepared regardless. (Hey! I was a Girl Scout for 12 years 😉 ) Don’t count on someone else to take care of you when you can take care of yourself!

Currently we don’t prep at all. If you’ve seen our other posts you know we don’t even have a fully stocked first aid kit! (What Would We Do with 50 SBD?). This past year we experienced a lot of severe weather. Tornadoes and tropical storms! Both tornado warnings happened when my husband was out of town for work! Needless to say I would feel a whole lot better if we were prepared for those situations. As we delve into prepping this is what we will tackle first!
