Sapiens by Yuval Noah Harari is good on this point. He suggests that early man was probably pretty happy as a hunter gatherer. Didn't work too hard compared to now. Had enough food. Had community. His view is that the agricultural revolution turned the vast majority of people into peasants with lifestyles that were on the whole much worse.
Dude's view that "work is shit and needs to be improved" probably still holds true for about 90% of humanity. Given how much technological progress we've made in the last 10000 years, we really ought to be doing better. Perhaps crypto can be a stepping stone to getting us there.
