I think that was a bold thing to do, and I also think that your instinct to end the relation might be spot on. You never know. It's brave and responsible that you actually ended it and didn't take the easy route out by ghosting the person.
You not telling anyone in your family was probably a good thing too, because you were able to listen to your intuition and feelings without external influence. At the end of the day, it's your life to live in your skin, and other people's opinions have zero value.
