The high mountain plateau of Velika planina lies in Kamnik-Savinja Alps. The plateau will attract you with scenic landscapes, vast pastures, and picturesque herdsmen's village.
Being one of the largest and still active herdsmen’s settlements in Europe, the village is very lively during the summer months, when the herdsmen bring the cattle from the valley to Velika planina.
You will immediately notice the huts with their unique and characteristic roofs. In the village there is a small museum collection and a chapel.
Do not miss the opportunity to sample the dairy goodies (or buy some of them)! Trnič is a special kind of cheese characteristic of the Velika Planina area. In the alpine huts you can also taste a traditional herdsmen's meal - soured milk and 'žganci' (buckwheat mush).
You can also stay overnight in one of the huts – I haven’t tried it yet, but will have to 😊.
The Plateau is criss-crossed with hiking trails so you can easily spend a whole day on the plateau. It is accessible on foot from the valley, but I enjoyed the ride with cable car from Kamniška Bistrica Valley.
It is a pure fairy-tale in summer but is also magic during winter (they have also few ski slopes!).
