The 37 kilometres long Solcava panoramic goes along the border between Slovenia and Austria and is nestled between the Kamnik-Savinja Alps and the Karawanks. When we were planning our trip, we didn’t know much about this road. We saw some very nice pictures of the location and we starts with online research to knew more and decided to make it as a day trip. We’ve found out that the road is suitable for hiking, cycling or to go with car. My first idea was to go with bikes, but since it was quite a hot summer day, we decided for a relaxing car trip. And I must say it was a good decision…my wife would ˝kill me˝ since the first part of the road was quite steep.

You can get more info about the road and point of interest in the tourist office in Solcava town or directly on the official web page (we followed the info on the web). In brief… it is a themed road about shepherd boy that lost his sheep. Through 20 sign boards you discover the history and the culture of Solcava region. The sign boards are positioned on breathtaking view points, overlooking imposing mountains peaks or charming green valleys.
We also discovered the mysterious story of the dragon Lintver….

One of the most interesting things for us was the source of the mineral water called ˝Sour waters˝. The spring was created along a tectonic break. The water is rich with iron and carbon dioxide, its taste is really unusual, but they are saying it has healing powers. I cannot tell you if it really has healing powers but the taste is not good, that’s for sure😊.

Along the road you will find some highland farms, that are offering traditional and home-made products.

Beside excellent homemade food (cheese, cottage cheese, dried meat, ...) you will find artisan products from wood and wool. Unfortunately, we were not very successful in finding these products, especially my wife was looking at the products made of felted wool. We realized that the place is not ˝touristic˝ and that we should contact specific persons that are still making these products. As in many places traditional manufacturing is preserved in very niche production and sometime you have to search deeper to find it.

I have to mention our last stop at a tourist farm that produce dairy products from goat milk. We refreshed ourselves with very tasty and really delicious ice cream from goat milk. That was really good and you have to try it if you will decide to visit Solcava !!
