It is less than 10 days until Carnival. It is supposed that the laud and colourful Carnival figures chase the winter away… that is why we took the last opportunity for a winter escape.

Rogla is a popular mountain resort in Slovenia. At the altitude of 1.500 meters above sea level it is a great location for outdoor activities in summer and wintertime. Offering easy and well-maintained ski slopes is an ideal destination for family holidays and skiing beginners. It is also one of the best locations for cross-country skiing. Nearby, there are also Zreče Spa where you can relax in the swimming pools and saunas.

We’ve enjoyed the time spent together, the youngest member of our family was improving his skiing skills at the skiing school, we were skiing but also walking through the snowy landscapes. One of the most popular hiking points in the area are the Lovrenc lakes. 20 smaller lakes that are located in a moor, which is the biggest high moor in Slovenia. The lakes were formed in the Ice Age, 8.000 years ago. They have a maximum depth of 1,2 meters and are exclusively watered by precipitation water.

This is how the lakes looks like without snow.

Apparently, there are many trails that lead to the lakes since we were wondering through the white nature, hoping to find the right way and meeting other hikers who were asking us for the same info: the right way to the lakes. Maybe the path is clear and logical to the locals, but not to us😊. Thanks to smartphones and navigation technology, we were able to find the way to the top. It was a nice walk, 1 hrs 30 minutes, one way.

We have also crossed a small stream two times. It was really a nice surprise 😮

On some parts it was a little bit frozen and icy, my wife tumbled twice…but she was laughing and repeating all that time, how smart we are that we have our hiking sticks with us (just that we left them in the car 😊).

Along the walking trail there are some benches, where hikers can rest and admire the view.

Unfortunately, on the top we were a little bit disappointed.. there were no lakes 😦. The whole moor was under snow. The wooden paths, the plants, the lakes, …nothing…just the snow. Well, there was still the watch-out tower (to watch out on the snow) and the info sign-boards. At least we were able to
read about the area and to see the images how it looks like in summer times 🤔.

My attention was captured by the very big ice crystals that were visible on the wooden fence at the top of the tower.

But winter is always beautiful in all its forms. We were blessed with sunny weather, fresh air, and the “cracking” sound of the white snow under our feet.

On our way back we saw the undoubted power of nature…there were some majestic trees uprooted from the ground. Apparently very strong winds managed to uproot such mighty trees.

And we also had a wonderful view of the valley below us.

On top of Rogla, there is a church of unusual shape. The Church of Transfiguration of Jesus upon a mountain in Rogla is the second highest-situated church in Slovenia. The unusual shape of the church, was inspired by the conical spruce, the most common tree in Pohorje.

As mentioned already, the resort is very popular for family vacations, and there are many cute elements all around the area, like this small wooden alpine village.

Latest attraction on Rogla is the Tree – top walk – that I’ve described in one of my past posts here.

And the most important thing is that my son completed his skiing – school and improved his skiing skills. Congratulation my little hero 💪
