Astral abyss as a literal, terrifying dimension of alien entities.
Dense mirror-like realm of raw emotion, fragmentation, and base desires.
Chaotic, multidimensional abyss indifferent or hostile to human sanity.
Lower astral is populated by elementals and asura entities that lack a human ego but feed on human negative emotions (fear, anger, lust).
Fluid mirror of the physical world. It is highly reactive to thoughts.
Great Old Ones, Shoggoths, Gaunts, Azathoth, Yog-Sothoth
Lovecraftian Parallel: This directly mirrors Lovecraft’s entities, which exist just beyond the veil of human perception.
In stories like From Beyond, a scientist creates a machine that stimulates the pineal gland, allowing humans to see the translucent, jellyfish-like monsters swimming through our everyday airspace, textbook sci-fi interpretation of lower astral entities.
Lovecraft's Dreamlands: Lovecraft explicitly mapped this in his Dream Cycle. The deeper parts of the Dreamlands (like the Underworld or the Plateau of Leng) are terrifying, shifting landscapes populated by ghouls and ancient evils, accessible only when the waking mind drops its shields during sleep.
Crossing the threshold or seeking forbidden occult knowledge doesn't bring enlightenment; it shatters the human psyche because the human mind is fundamentally unequipped to handle the vast, chaotic geometry of the lower planes.
In Theosophy, Kamaloka (the desire realm) is the exact equivalent of the Lower Astral plane. It functions in the 4th dimension as a dense, emotionally heavy zone where lower human desires, cravings, and astral bodies temporarily reside after physical death.
