All eukaryotes, except for some unicellular eukaryotes, such as parasites and some yeasts, utilize Mo. In eukaryotes, Mo is present in the active center of five enzymes that are responsible for important steps in nitrogen, sulphur, and carbon metabolism, such as nitrate reductase (NR), sulphite oxidase (SO), aldehyde oxidase (AO), xanthine oxidoreductase/ dehydrogenase (XOR/XD), and mitochondrial amidoxime reducing component (mARC).
