what i thinks happening is, a form of Deprotonation or Reduction of positive & negative of acid & base.
so when the parasite (or whatever it is) makes contact with this material, it creates a molecular bond, or if eaten by a parasite it rapidly expands & makes bonds, like a mouse trap, a Rexox & Chelation reaction.
