Preventative maintenance may be changing the oil in your car at certain intervals or checking the tire pressure. Predictive maintenance could be considered a subset of preventative maintenance. Under predictive maintenance there may be a part that fails on average every 125,000 miles, like a timing belt. This mean time between failure (MTBF) is used predict the failure so a replacement of the timing belt can be done as preventative maintenance every 100,000 miles.
