I grew up in Alabama, graduating high school 42 years ago in 1977. Around 1979 or 1980 a girl one or two years younger than me was abducted and held over a weekend during which she was repeatedly raped. The perpetrator was quickly arrested and a trial was scheduled.

The family was well known and well connected in the county. The judge, who knew the family, ended up dismissing the case on a technicality. It just so happened the girl had two older brothers that were the nicest guys you would ever meet, until you made them angry.

After release, the perpetrator disappeared from the county never to be heard from again. There were rumors of course of the potential for the application of some redneck justice that was responsible for the perpetrators disappearance.

A lot of things have changed in Alabama since the late 70's, but I suspect there will not be many convicted sex criminals taking advantage of this form of parole. Instead they may want to retain the relative safety of prison.
