if my numbers are right, you are losing money until you reach level 31, and only then you are slightly on profit.
you can have up to 4 heroes and one sword, if all are the same splinter, like watter fire or whatever. get a very good 5 star sword, it is changing the game. attack the splinter that takes extra damage.
