Why do we do all of this? This is a question that comes to my mind from time to time. We wake up every day, often still tired, get out of bed, have some coffee, and head into another day of work. We spend hours doing something we do not always enjoy, dealing with problems, demands, bills, and worries. At the end of the month, we receive our salary, and a large part of it already has a destination. Then the next month comes, and we do it all over again. But why? Are we living just to work and working just to pay the bills? If we stop and think about it, there is something a little strange about this cycle. After all, if most of our lives are consumed trying to guarantee a better life, when are we actually living?
Well, I do not believe money is the great villain in this story. We need it, and it would be very easy to talk about purpose when we do not have to worry about rent, food, bills, or any other responsibility. The problem, for me, begins when money stops being a tool and becomes the ultimate goal. We work to have money, we buy things to try to make ourselves happy, and then we need to work even more to pay for those things. And so we create a cycle, a cycle designed to keep us addicted to this hellish path. I do not think there is anything wrong with wanting comfort, traveling, buying a house, or having a financially stable life. I want those things too. But I believe all of this should serve something greater. After all, what is the point of achieving everything we want if, along the way, we lose exactly the time we needed to enjoy those achievements?
Well, maybe our purpose is not something as grand as we imagine. I like this idea because it makes life a little simpler. Maybe our purpose is to take care of someone, raise our children, be there for our family, build a true friendship, visit places we have always wanted to see, or simply learn new things. Maybe it is helping someone through a difficult moment or leaving a good memory in someone else's life. And the most interesting thing is that this can change. What made sense to me a few years ago may not have the same importance today. We change, our priorities change, and our answers change too. I think it would be strange to go through our entire lives trying to follow a single answer to a question that we ourselves keep changing.
In my case, I cannot imagine that we wake up every day just to pay the bills. Of course, there are days when that seems to be the only reason. There are moments when we are tired, worried, and all we want is for the day to end. But even in those moments, I believe we need to have something to look forward to. A goal, a person, a dream, a desire, or even a small thing that makes us think tomorrow could be better. Maybe that is what keeps us standing when life gets difficult.
I think perhaps the most important question is not why we work, but what we are working so hard for. What are we building with all this effort? Money pays the bills, but it cannot answer by itself what the meaning of all this is. That answer is different for every person, and perhaps it is also different for ourselves at each stage of life. I still do not have a definitive answer to my why. Maybe nobody does. But as long as I continue finding reasons to wake up, keep trying, learning, loving, and living, I think I already have a good reason to keep moving forward. And sometimes, the answers do not even need to be that deep.
