Today I was rooting against France. I really wanted to see Senegal win this match, and for a good portion of the game, that seemed entirely possible. The African side put in a balanced performance and, if not for that shot that hit the post in the first half, they might even have taken the lead.
Would that moment have changed the entire story of the match? Maybe. Football is made of talent, skill, physical preparation, and often, small moments. A goal at that point could have boosted Senegal's confidence and forced France to play under pressure. We'll never know. In the end, the 3–1 scoreline was actually quite comfortable for the French.
And that is exactly why I consider France the biggest favorite to win the tournament. As a Brazilian, I admit that I always root against them. Maybe it's the frustration of seeing such a strong national team that isn't ours. Since the first World Cup I followed, back in 1998, France has always been one of the most feared teams in the world. Just like Germany, which left us with an unforgettable memory in 2014, now recalled in their match against Curaçao, and, of course, Argentina, our greatest rival, the French somehow manage to renew themselves generation after generation without losing competitiveness.
That is why it's hard not to feel a certain sadness when seeing the Brazilian national team so far from that level. Our opening match against Morocco was well below expectations. Can we still go far? Of course we can. After all, football is not decided on paper. But looking at the competition so far, it's difficult to place Brazil among the main favorites. Then again, given the balance we've seen in this World Cup, nothing is truly decided. It's hard to make any firm predictions, and I'm not sure whether that's a positive or a negative thing for our team.
In fact, one of the things that has impressed me the most in this World Cup is the level of balance between the teams. Nations considered smaller are putting up extremely tough fights against traditional powers. I was surprised by the United States' performance against Paraguay, a team I follow more closely and one that is far from weak. We've also seen very competitive matches involving Spain and Belgium against theoretically inferior opponents.
Cape Verde holding Spain for much of their match is a perfect reflection of what I've been seeing in this tournament. There are no easy games anymore. The technical gap still exists, but it feels smaller than in previous editions. And when that happens, surprises become much more likely. So far, that was my favorite match, even though it ended 0–0.
Now I hope Brazil's match against Haiti is a little more comfortable. A convincing victory, perhaps by two or three goals, would do a lot to boost the team's confidence. On paper, it is an accessible matchup. In practice, however, this World Cup has already shown several times that theory and reality do not always go hand in hand. I want to see our young prospects on the field. Endrick and Rayan deserve an opportunity; they are our hope for the future.
There are no more easy opponents. Every team arrives organized, physically prepared, and capable of competing. That is turning this World Cup into an extremely interesting tournament. And if someone manages to eliminate France, I believe the path to the title will become completely open.
Today, in my view, there is one team above all the others. France seems to be a few steps ahead of the competition. But football loves to defy expectations, and perhaps that is exactly what makes a World Cup so fascinating. What could happen next? I only know one thing: I don't want France to win, even if they deserve it.
Hoje eu estava torcendo contra a França. Queria muito ver Senegal vencer essa partida e, durante boa parte do jogo, isso pareceu perfeitamente possível. A equipe africana fez um confronto equilibrado e, se não fosse aquela bola na trave no primeiro tempo, poderia até ter saído na frente do placar.
Esse detalhe teria mudado toda a história da partida? Talvez. O futebol é feito de talento, habilidade, preparo físico e, muitas vezes, de pequenos momentos. Um gol naquele instante poderia aumentar a confiança de Senegal e obrigar a França a jogar sob pressão. Nunca saberemos. No fim, o placar de 3 a 1 acabou sendo até confortável para os franceses.
E é justamente por isso que considero a França a grande favorita ao título. Como brasileiro, admito que sempre torço contra eles. Talvez seja aquela dor de cotovelo de ver uma seleção tão forte que não seja a nossa. Desde a primeira Copa que acompanhei, em 1998, a França sempre esteve entre as equipes mais temidas do mundo. Assim como a Alemanha, que nos deixou uma lembrança inesquecível em 2014, relembrada agora contra a seleção de Curaçao.. e bem, a Argentina, nossa maior rival, os franceses conseguem se renovar geração após geração sem perder competitividade.
Por isso é difícil não sentir certa tristeza ao ver a Seleção Brasileira distante desse nível. Nossa estreia contra Marrocos foi muito abaixo do esperado. Podemos ir longe? Claro que podemos, afinal futebol não é decidido apenas no papel. Mas olhando para o contexto da competição até aqui, é difícil colocar o Brasil entre os principais favoritos, mas pelo equilíbrio dessa copa, bem, não temos nada definido e é difícil cravar qualquer coisa e não sei se isso é um ponto positivo ou negativo para a nossa seleção.
Aliás, uma das coisas que mais me chamou atenção nesta Copa foi justamente o equilíbrio entre as seleções. Equipes consideradas menores estão fazendo jogos duríssimos contra potências tradicionais. Fiquei surpreso com a atuação dos Estados Unidos contra o Paraguai, uma seleção que acompanho mais de perto e que está longe de ser fraca. Também vimos partidas equilibradas envolvendo Espanha e Bélgica contra adversários teoricamente inferiores.
Cabo Verde segurando a Espanha durante grande parte do confronto é um retrato perfeito do que estou vendo nesta Copa. Não existem mais jogos fáceis. A diferença técnica ainda existe, mas ela parece menor do que em edições anteriores. E quando isso acontece, as surpresas se tornam muito mais prováveis. Até aqui, foi meu jogo favorito, mesmo sendo um placar de 0 x 0.
Agora espero que o jogo do Brasil contra o Haiti seja mais tranquilo. Uma vitória convincente, quem sabe por dois ou três gols de diferença, ajudaria bastante a elevar a confiança da equipe. Na teoria, é um confronto acessível. Na prática, porém, esta Copa já mostrou várias vezes que teoria e realidade nem sempre andam juntas. Quero ver nossas promessa em campo, Endrick e Rayan merecem uma oportunidade, são nossa esperança.
Não existem mais seleções bobas. Todos os times chegam organizados, preparados fisicamente e capazes de competir. Isso está transformando esta Copa em um torneio extremamente interessante. E se por acaso alguém conseguir eliminar a França, acredito que o caminho para o título ficará completamente aberto.
Hoje, para mim, existe uma seleção acima de todas as outras. A França parece estar alguns passos à frente da concorrência. Mas o futebol adora contrariar as previsões, e talvez seja exatamente isso que torne uma Copa do Mundo tão fascinante. O que será que pode acontecer? Eu só sei que não quero que a França vença, por mais que ela mereça.
