I'm familiar with Stephen King as a novelist and as a tutor - his 'On Writing' is invaluable. Some of the advice he gives can be taken to be adapted for your own benefit, but some of his advice needs to be set in stone, I think.

#2, #4, #11, #14, #15, #17, #18 and #19 are my rules to take from this. You may have others. One I can add is: Don't stop writing. I stopped for a while and it's so difficult to get back to the discipline I once had.
