From https://www.rojodojo.com A preview of my Bujinkan video exploring 技かけない waza kakenai. We warmed up with jodan and gedan uke drills. These evolved into using the uke itself for 虚実 kyojitsu.
Next, I showed how to open up the space with your blocks. You want the opponent to attack emptiness. Then the attacker leads himself to his own destruction. We do this with small and soft movement without grabbing.
I used a form of 片巻 katamaki to demonstrate this. It is deceptive because it starts very light. But you can amp up the intensity and explode from this emptiness very quickly.
When Hatsumi Sensei describes this he sometimes uses the term 技かけない waza kakenai. This means that it is not a waza, technique, or a trick. When we try to copy Soke’s technique this is why we fail. It is not a technique.
I showed how to use this type of movement against multiple attackers. I received the first attack at long range, opening up space from 平の構え hira no kamae. Hatsumi Sensei says it is like dangling a wasp for bait.
When you create space with this kind of deception, you can use it to draw a weapon. I showed this with a knife, but it could be any hidden weapon. I demonstrated drawing early, drawing late, or even starting with the knife already drawn.
I used these same principles from 音無しの構 otonashi no kamae with the hanbo. This unassuming kamae can create hidden tension. When you release, the stick snaps into a strike.
In another henka, I turned the opponent’s 小捌 daisho against him. As the space opens, his own saya gets bound up across his hips. Or, we press his tsuba into his own shoulder. This kind of 大小捌型 daisho sabaki mirrors the use of the hanbo.
Of Note: goodbye Korea town, hello fjords!
