1Sa 30:6 And David was greatly distressed; for the people spake of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and for his daughters: but David encouraged himself in the LORD his God.

Sometimes we are left alone and there is nobody around to say something encouraging. Sometimes we are truly left alone and other times it is just our perception of things. Either way it is real to us! The feeling of being on our own and even our friends and family have distanced themselves from us.

I took this photo as I was out for a walk yesterday.

David had been out with his army and when they had returned, their wives and children, plus all of their possessions were gone. The enemy had come to take them all captive. When David’s faithful men saw that their families and all of their belongings were gone, they all turned on David, like it was all his fault.

THIS IS THE REWARD FOR FOLLOWING YOU?

Sometimes life hits us hard and from many directions at one time. Sometimes it is when we are serving God and doing everything we know to do, and yet we face such fiery trials. At this time in David’s life, it most likely seemed to him that even God was not there to help him.

David’s own family was taken, plus he had the burden of his men all had lost their families. Their wives and children in the merciless hands of the enemy. What do you think was going through their minds? How was their loved ones being treated? And not one person came to David to console him or encourage him. But David! What did David do?

“But David encouraged himself in the Lord.”

David did not just give himself a pep talk! He did not just encourage himself, but did so “in the Lord”. His encouragement was in God. This is what we need to do when our situation is impossible! Go to the One that can do the impossible! The One Who can do what we cannot do. We need to remind ourselves of His Faithfulness. His Character! His Promises!

I have been many times where I felt I was alone and abandoned. The people I thought would stand by my side seemed nowhere to be found. But we have in Christ One that sticks closer than a brother. He is Faithful above everyone else.

Let’s encourage ourselves in the Lord.
