Mat 6:12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
To me it is interesting that the Bible parallels forgiveness to paying off a debt. The Bible uses monetary terms for forgiveness even when the forgiveness covers something that is non-monetary.
About two years ago God instructed me to forgive every monetary debt owed to me. This was not because I had a lot of money, but it was an exercise in obedience and a learning experience. When a debt is forgiven, it is impossible and wrong to go back and try to collect a debt.
When I forgave the debt, the debt was counted as PAID IN FULL
Parallel in forgiveness
When someone trespasses against us, they have made a debt. The debt could be a terrible wrong against us or someone we love and we begin to hold a grudge. This thing could be unforgivable and the person that did it is truly guilty.
But God tells us to forgive and He actually requires this of us. Now that we have forgiven the debt, we can no longer require payment. We cannot bring it up and throw it in this person’s face. This debt that was owed us is counted as “Paid in Full”.
The wonderful thing is that this is exactly what Jesus did for us on the cross. When He said, “It is finished”, He paid in full for our sin. Our debt to God was cancelled and He will never come to us to collect this debt. Our part is to ask for forgiveness and to believe on Jesus. We confess our sins to Him.
1Jn 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
