In this video, I go over communities, which are groups of populations of different species, and discuss the predator–prey or consumer–resource interactions between species. These interactions are best illustrated in a trophic pyramid and a food web. The trophic (from Greek trophē referring to food) pyramid groups biomass based on whether they are autotrophs (which obtain energy from the Sun), heterotrophs (which consume autotrophs or other heterotrophs), and decomposers (which are heterotrophs that feed on waste products or dead bodies of organisms). Typically, just 10% of energy in each trophic level is transferred to the one above, with the remaining 90% being waste, dead material used by decomposers, and as heat lost from metabolism.
