We had to drive today from Death Valley to our next location- Bakersfield, California. We don’t like empty runs, so I inserted two hikes into the long drive - Mesquite Dunes and Mosaic Canyon.
When we drove across the ridge of Sierra Nevada, we left the arid, hot climate behind and entered a humid, Mediterranean-like climate of west California. For the first time in two weeks we saw green grass and trees.
Looks good, but there’s a big problem in Bakersfield. When you look at a map, you see river Kern. But in reality it is a completely dried river bed. Water upstream has been used for agriculture and nothing flows into the city. The first photo of this post was taken in the very center of the riverbed.
