The pic above is a sketch made by a daughter of my friend. She is a student of architecture and last Friday went to Głuchołazy, a town on PL/CZ border. The students were asked to draw pictures of the small medieval town and its architecture.

My friend’s daughter had no sooner returned home than the town was flooded. Enormous rainfall on Saturday (a month’s worth of rain in one day!) caused the local river to swell and flood the old town. See the same street from news coverage today:

The river that flows thru the town originates in Czechia, where it’s named Bela. Once in Poland, the name changes to Biała. Ironically both the Czech and the Polish names of the river mean ‚White’. It’s not white anymore and has turned into a beast. The river first ravaged the Czech region of Jesenik and then entered Poland, where it got extra power from stream running down from surrounding mountains. Further downstream there’s a dam and a retention reservoir. People leaving lower hope the reservoir holds the water…
