When I was about 8 years old,I was asked on a TV program "What I wanted to be in the future and who was my role model?", I gladly answered that I wanted to become an astronaut and my role model was Neil Armstrong. I've always been interested in science and fascinated by space but I think I intentionally gave those answers because they seemed different and unique in comparism to the "doctor, lawyer and engineer" answers my colleagues gave.
I also remember how I wanted to be an exceptional and talented human who everyone would love to emulate. I wanted to be so good at so many things and get admired by everyone. At age eight, I wasn't so sure how to go about that but the thoughts were mesmerising. I fascinated alot about speaking a foreign language, painting , swimming, culinary skills, gymnastics e.t.c.
Years later, I'm still interested in science but got hit by some realities that made me consider studying a course that
was available and affordable in my country. I loved chemistry alot in high school and went to get my Bachelor's degree in Chemistry. It was a tough ride and I self-sponsored the later part of my study. I wanted more knowledge and went to further for a Master's degree in Organic chemistry which I just completed.
Well, I really didn't know I was gradually becoming the kind of person I wanted to be when I was younger until a neighbor asked me to advice their young daughter on focusing on her education. They had thought highly of me and felt I was worthy of emulating to an appreciable level since some of my current achievements aren't so easy to get in a country with so many flaws where time and money are so important and many folks think education is a waste of money, time and resources.
While studying, I successfully acquired and mastered so many skills I've always wanted to learn when I was younger. Some of these skills aren't so easy to learn and require years of practice to master as well as some finance. I've been honoured to pass on some of these skills to younger people and that makes me so fulfilled and proud of my achievements. I'm also very glad I learnt them at the right time.
Although I have alot of things I still wish to achieve before a certain age, I'm thankful and happy about my life and the journey so far. I'm working towards a better version of myself and I'm certain my 8 years old self would be proud of me today.
