May this week be filled with blessings worldwide. Wishing everyone well and their families in good health and well-being.
Leaving our homes is not just for the various activities we, as ordinary people, have for different reasons—work, academic, family, and personal commitments—but a daily reality for most of us.
Walking in different areas is an excellent activity or a healthy habit for most people. Not the kind of walk where our minds are focused on what to do and what to achieve; it's the kind of walk where we are observant and mindful of our steps, taking in the surroundings with our eyes.
Even in these times, I think there are still people who don't see the difference between a busy walk and a relaxing walk, exercising our bodies and observing nature.
On these mindful walks, we become aware of so many things, from the tiny flower on a creeping plant that sometimes haunts us with its beauty because we find it everywhere, to those that grow so splendidly that they don't need to say "Here I am"—they simply reveal themselves. Their grace and beauty allow it.
On the other hand, there are those we consider creeping plants, weeds, or whatever name we use. These also have their place in the natural environment, even if they grow on their own; they manifest themselves in some way. Whether seen or not, they are there, showing what they bring.
Here I show this plant. It was in my memories because in the yard of my parents' house where I grew up, there was always one of these. I remember my maternal grandmother, when she visited us, and her daily bathing ritual: she would take leaves and flowers from this plant, rub them with water in a bucket, and place it in the sun. When she bathed, she would use this sun-treated water to rinse her body. Now, I understand her reasons, even though many considered it a foolish practice. Each plant has its benefits for our bodies, whether used for cleansing or on skin wounds. Our ancestors used all of nature's properties for various purposes.
The Lantana, scientifically known as Cariaquito, comes in a variety of colors, from yellow to orange and red, as seen in the images, and also in purple. It is notable for its drought resistance and its ability to attract butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds. In popular culture, its branches and leaves are used in ritual baths for energetic cleansing to attract good luck and prosperity and ward off negativity.
In traditional medicine, macerated leaves or boiled leaves are used in external compresses to soothe skin irritations.
Drinking it as an infusion also has its uses, although ingesting tea made from its leaves is a delicate matter and should be discussed with a naturopath who can advise on its proper use.
