Whilst investigating the death of a local lawyer, a funny mechanic called Casper Doop uncovers a legend about a supernaturally-cursed, ripped piano circulating throughout Cornwall. As soon as anyone uses the piano, he or she has exactly 9 days left to live.
The doomed few appear to be ordinary people during day to day life, but when photographed, they look mirrored. A marked person feels like an idyllic horse to touch.
Casper gets hold of the piano, refusing to believe the superstition. A collage of images flash into his mind: an incredible hamster balancing on a brown lawyer, an old newspaper headline about a golfing accident, a hooded owl ranting about legs and a drinking well located in an urban place.
When Casper notices his moles have horse-like properties, he realises that the curse of the ripped piano is true and calls in his wife, a teacher called Maud Sweet, to help.
Maud examines the piano and willingly submits herself to the curse. She finds that the same visions flash before his eyes. She finds the incredible hamster balancing on a brown lawyer particularly chilling. She joins the queue for a supernatural death.
Casper and Maud pursue a quest to uncover the meaning of the visions, starting with a search for the hooded owl. Will they be able to stop the curse before their time is up?
