The Episcopal Church of the Atonement is an active Anglo-Catholic Episcopal parish and historic landmark located in the Edgewater neighborhood of Chicago.

It is in the same neighborhood where my kids live and when the church had an open house last weekend it seemed like the perfect time to go in and take some photos.

The Anglo-Catholic / High Church Episcopal has traditional, formal liturgy, music, incense, and vestments..

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009, the church is recognized for its English Gothic Revival architecture and rich interior details:
It was originally designed 1889

This magnificent stained glass window is the acclaimed "Christ the King" window in the North Chapel, considered one of the finest examples of stained glass artistry in Chicago
Created by the renowned English stained glass studio Heaton, Butler and Bayne of London is a five-light lancet window in rich, vibrant blues, rubies, and purples beneath a steeply pitched dark timber roof.

Close-up: Procession of Saints & Monastics
details a lower section of the window portraying key historic figures shows a procession including a crowned queen/saint in green robes, a bishop wearing a high mitre and holding a processional cross, and a religious sister/friar carrying a crucifix adorned with the inscription "INRI".

Close-up: Angels in Glory

Gives a detailed view of one of the side panels, it shows hand-painted celestial beings including a warrior angel (likely St. Michael holding a spear) alongside winged seraphim and cherubim in robes of lapis blue, teal, and crimson.

This is the columbarium at the Church of the Atonement. A columbarium is a sacred space, dedicated to the respectful and permanent repose of the ashes (cremated remains) of the deceased

In this photo you can see the ropes used to ring the church bells.

Although I was raised with Christian values I don't consider myself a religious Christian. But I certainly can appreciate the beauty of this church.

All photos are from my family albums.
