The brown street sign designates an honorary street name for the acclaimed Chicago author Nelson Algren (1909–1981), best known for novels such as The Man with the Golden Arm (winner of the first National Book Award in 1950) and his prose poem Chicago: City on the Make.,
Algren lived near this intersection in a third-floor apartment from 1959 to 1975.
By the early to mid-20th century, the neighborhood was filled with a thriving community of European immigrants.
Wealthy German, Scandinavian, and Polish merchants built ornate mansions and townhomes along these streets.
